In the effective use of land, the step up from producing foodstuffs
on a horticultural scale is to consider cultivating whole fields with
one crop. The most widely grown crop is grass which is harvested
by man or beast and eventually becomes part of a food-producing
chain.
Producing food is what land use is about, although attention
is sometimes given to the leisure aspect of land use or to the
wildlife it supports. Mainly, however, we are concerned with
supporting ourselves from the resources available and the basic
resource is land.
Having progressed from gathering what nature
offered to specifically producing for our own consumption, mankind
went through many different sagas of ingenuity to make his
job easier.
